The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG) is the leading standards body responsible for the training and education of specialists and GP obstetricians in obstetrics and gynaecology in Australia and New Zealand.

Job Description

Te Whiwhinga Mahi | The Opportunity

The Equity Advisor is responsible for progressing RANZCOG's commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and health equity in Aotearoa New Zealand. Working closely with the Executive Director Aotearoa New Zealand, He Hono Wāhine, the Aotearoa team, and wider College teams, the Equity Advisor will support the committee He Hono Wāhine to deliver projects and activities under Te Rautaki Māori me te Ara Whakamua. Primarily based in the Wellington office, the role focuses on maintaining momentum, keeping key workstreams moving, and supporting core relationships and activities.
 

This is a full time fixed‑term parental leave cover, until end of November 2026. However, applications from candidates seeking part time (0.8 FTE/ 30 hours per week) arrangements are also welcome.

Key Responsibilities:

Committee and relationship support

  • Provide committee coordination for He Hono Wāhine, liaising with the Chair, preparing meeting agendas, papers, minutes, and following up on action items.
  • Prepare reports for the He Hono Wāhine Chair for RANZCOG’s Board and Council.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with Māori Fellows, trainees, partner organisations, and cultural advisors.
  • Assist with travel planning and event logistics for meetings or other events.


Project and activity coordination

  • Support He Hono Wāhine and Te Kāhui Oranga ō Nuku to deliver the activities of Te Rautaki Māori me te Ara Whakamua, to grow the O&G workforce and improve health outcomes for Māori women and whānau.
  • Plan and support, or contribute to, events that support the Maori O&G workforce or focus on health equity and cultural safety and competence in the wider workforce.
  • Work with RANZCOG’s trial Kaiāwhina position to coordinate support for trainees and foster interest in O&G amongst Māori medical students and junior doctors.

Equity, advocacy, and submissions

  • Contribute to and draft submissions, letters, or other advocacy activities related to women’s health equity in Aotearoa New Zealand.
  • Provide advice to RANZCOG leadership, Aotearoa New Zealand colleagues and Australian colleagues to foster understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and health equity.
  • Promote consideration of health equity and Te Tiriti o Waitangi in all RANZCOG work, and connect staff and members to He Hono Wāhine, Kaumatua or other advisors as required.
     

Desired Skills and Experience

Ko wai koe | About you - Key Selection Criteria

  • Tertiary qualification or relevant training/experience in health, policy or cultural advisory roles 
  • Knowledge and understanding of te ao and tikanga Māori and commitment to te reo Māori.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and how it applies in health.
  • An interest in, and commitment to, women's health and improving health outcomes for Māori. 
  • Ability to effectively able to engage with Māori and non-Māori to advance outcomes for Māori.
  • Highly developed oral and written communication skills with an eye for detail including document preparation and formatting.
  • Ability to work independently or collaboratively across teams, coupled with an ability to prioritise tasks and work efficiently
  • Proficient use of common computer applications, including MS Office, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to work occasional weekends or additional hours for meetings or events (time-in-lieu/overtime will be available) and open to occasional travel within New Zealand or to Australia.
